Introduction Lallemand, a global leader in yeast and bacteria production, sought to improve efficiency, transparency, and data accessibility by transitioning from paper-based batch records to an Electronic Batch Record (EBR) system. Partnering with Bow&Stern, they implemented Tulip, a low-code/no-code digital platform, to streamline operations and enhance data management. Why Move to an Electronic Batch Record (EBR)?

Lallemand recognized several key advantages in adopting an EBR system:

  • Increased Transparency: Real-time access to batch status for plant managers, QA teams, and lab personnel—without searching through paperwork.

  • Paperless Efficiency: Reduced environmental impact and improved data organization.

  • Data-Driven Decision-Making: EBR enables seamless KPI tracking and data export, reducing manual entry and improving accuracy.

  • Process Control & Compliance: Automated checks ensure critical steps are completed before proceeding, enhancing quality assurance.

“Having everything in one place where you can see it as you go is a big advantage. There are other benefits too, like ensuring operators complete steps before moving forward.”

Implementation with Bow&Stern and Tulip

Lallemand partnered with Bow&Stern to implement Tulip, a cutting-edge low-code/no-code platform designed for manufacturing digital transformation.

“This was my first time working on a project like this, and the Bow&Stern team was fantastic. Their expertise sped up the process significantly.”

Why Tulip?

  • User-Friendly: Even with minimal coding experience, Lallemand could build and modify workflows easily.

  • Customizable & Scalable: A flexible "sandbox" environment allowing the team to adapt and refine the system as needed.

  • Future-Ready: With successful implementation, other Lallemand sites could adopt the solution, streamlining operations across the company.

“Tulip, or something like it, is the future for manufacturing. It’s user-friendly without being overly complex.”

Challenges & Lessons Learned

While the implementation process was smooth, some IT-related challenges arose, particularly around cybersecurity protocols. However, as digital solutions become more common in manufacturing, Lallemand expects smoother integration in future projects.

“Cybersecurity is important, but it can be frustrating when solutions take a long time to implement. Hopefully, as these processes become more common, things will get smoother.”

Looking Ahead

With EBR successfully integrated, Lallemand is now optimizing KPI tracking and data automation. The ultimate goal is to expand the solution across multiple sites, further driving operational efficiency.

“Other Lallemand entities have looked at EBR but haven’t had much success. If we finalize the remaining bits in the next couple of months, I don’t see why we couldn’t roll it out across the business unit and beyond.”

Conclusion

By implementing Tulip’s EBR system with the support of Bow&Stern, Lallemand has successfully digitized its batch record process, paving the way for smarter, more efficient manufacturing. The project’s success demonstrates the potential for wider adoption across Lallemand’s global operations.
